Alejandro Rubio’s paintings are intended to create a world of their own, in which imagination, observation, and interpretation collide to address the landscape that surrounds him. These images are never realistic. A native of Uruguay, based in the Bay Area since 2001, Rubio carries with him the painterly qualities inherent to his origin as an indirect member of the Constructivist school initiated by the great Uruguayan master Joaquin Torres Garcia. Incredibly flat areas are constructed combining the illusion of perspective with a purely abstract approach to painting, thus creating an optical effect of clear impact.

“I imagine a connection between the fractured land and the lives of the people who inhabit it, and from this I draw my inspiration.”
